As an industrial engineer you work mainly in the technical or industrial sector. In this context you plan, review and improve operating procedures in terms of their technical efficiency, cost effectiveness and environmental and social sustainability.
You may choose to work in one of these professional fields:
- materials logistics
- production planning and control
- distribution logistics
- quality management
As a business mathematician you are a specialist in data management, statistical evaluation, data mining, and analyses based on financial mathematics.
You may work in:
- the financial and insurance sector
- customer and market research (surveys, analytical customer relationship management, etc.)
- administration, e.g. in statistics offices
- the health sector
Industrial engineers and business mathematicians are in great demand because they are equipped with a sound knowledge of both technical/industrial and business concerns. They may work in industrial, commercial or service companies, in consultancies or in public authorities. If you are interested in continuing your studies, you may choose to enrol for a Master’s degree programme at a Swiss or foreign university.
In concrete terms! What does an industrial engineer do?
This is a » real example which the student Michael Bühlmann investigated in his undergraduate dissertation. This example illustrates how an industrial engineer works.
The topic is jams on the runways at Zurich Airport – why they occur and how they can be prevented.
